Charges filed in connection to the Thomas Espy murder

CENTERVILLE, MO – The Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that the persons responsible for the murder of Thomas Espy on April 25, 2012 have been identified.

The Sheriff’s Office has identified Zachary Clampitt of Park Hills and Tyson Fortner of Bismarck as the suspect’s.  The Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking 1st degree murder charges, armed criminal action and burglary charges against Clampitt and 2nd degree murder and burglary charges against Fortner.

On April 25, 2012, Thomas Espy was shot through the glass window of his residence while he was sleeping on the couch located under that window.  This resulted in the death of Espy.  In May 2012, the St Louis County Police Department was involved in a short pursuit of Clampitt that resulted in the assault of the St Louis County Police Officer.  Clampitt fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended.  A search of Clampitt’s vehicle produced a firearm that was the same caliber as the weapon used in the Espy murder.

In October 2013 information was received that Tyson Fortner and Zachary Clampitt may have been involved in the murder of Espy.  The pistol was obtained from St Louis County Police Department and was positively identified as the weapon used in the Espy murder.

Interviews were conducted and Fortner admitted to law enforcement that Clampitt and he had went to the residence of Espy and during the process of committing the burglary Clampitt had went to the window of the residence and shot inside.  They then both fled the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Drug Enforcement Agency, South Central Drug Task Force, St Francois County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance in the resolution of this case.
